Cygnal Technologies to provide metro area network for Apotex
Solution includes Nortel platform, Rogers network
November 10, 2005
MARKHAM, ONTARIO, November 10, 2005 – Cygnal Technologies Corp. (TSX: CYN) has been selected to provide a dedicated communications network connecting four Greater Toronto Area (GTA) locations of Apotex Inc., the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company. The five year contract includes the implementation and maintenance of Nortel equipment and Rogers fibre to create a SONET metro area network, providing Apotex with dedicated bandwidth to more tightly integrate its major sites in the GTA.
“Cygnal has built 80% of the community networks in Ontario servicing the ‘MUSH sector’ – municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals,” said Todd Rutherford, President, Cygnal Network Solutions. “We are now applying this unique expertise to enterprise customers like Apotex who can realize tremendous benefits from connecting multiple sites through a scalable metro area network.”
After a period of rapid expansion during which it has completed major expansions to several sites, Apotex has found that some of its facilities require additional bandwidth to take full advantage of modern technologies.
“A reliable, high capacity, dedicated network will accommodate our growing need for real-time communications and information sharing among technical and research staff,” said William Shanks, Apotex Manager of Telecommunications and Network Services. “We were impressed by Cygnal’s experience in this area and their creativity in proposing solutions, and we look forward to working with them on this project.”
Cygnal will implement a metro area network built on Nortel’s Optera Metro 3500 platform, utilizing a combination of Apotex's existing fibre infrastructure and Rogers Cable’s fibre network to provide connectivity between the four sites. The solution is configured as an OC-48 (2.488 gigabit per second) SONET network, scalable to OC-192 (10 Gbps). Redundancy features will automatically reroute traffic in the event network degradation or failure are sensed. Cygnal’s ongoing support program will include network monitoring, remote and on-site diagnostics, repair and resolution.
